How and where to Start a Career in Fashion Design

It's not easy to enter into the world of professional fashion. There's a lot of competition for jobs, and a lot of people are putting in long hours trying to come up with the next big thing. In the end, there are a few practical options for improving your chances of making money in fashion design.

The first step is to obtain a four-year liberal arts degree with a fashion design certification from an accredited college or university. You can get by with just a partner's certification, but a four-year college education will give you a leg up. (Getting a master's degree in expressive arts is far from a bad idea.) During your college year, take advantage of as many volunteer opportunities, summer temporary jobs, and paid opportunities as possible. Simply put, don't go to so many places that you end up spreading yourself too thin and unable to achieve the finest results possible. No one can predict when a temporary work or a part-time job may lead to a full-time job offer. You'll also improve your portfolio, your network of connections and references, your skills, and, most importantly, your level of certainty. When you've had a lot of different experiences in the professional world as an understudy, you'll know what kinds of places you should, in all seriousness, fit into and would be most happy working at.

When you do graduate, accept any division-level employment you can, even if it's just low-maintenance work. (You can usually make a living by doing something else as an afterthought, such as working at a restaurant or caring for children.) Then, work as hard as you can, listen carefully and follow all of your director's instructions, and pique your supervisors' interest to the point where they'll offer you a full-time position once one becomes available. This is an excellent moment to remain consistent and diligent. Try not to give up. It may be challenging to get work, but keep sending three to five messages every day until you find that first job.

It is also necessary that you continue to manage your portfolio. Continue to choose the pieces you're most proud of and that best address your fashion instinct from the time you start college through the end of your professional career. Your portfolio is just as important to your career as a CV is to many other professionals. It's also a good idea to maintain track of both a physical and a digital portfolio. If you're unsure about what components to remember for your portfolio, speak with your college academic advisor or a professional you know and trust.

As with any career, it's a good idea to set some long-term goals for yourself, followed by some intermediate goals, so you can see how far you've come. Also, write down your objectives so you can pull them out and look at them from time to time; this is a great persuasion tool.
